“You can’t know where you’re going unless you know where you come from.” While many may not aspire to this completely, it definitely doesn’t hurt knowing where you come from.
Knowing your history could also provide some context to who you are and why you are that way. It could help explain the world around you and how you fit or not fit in that world. Knowing your history has its benefits. Once you know your history, whether immediate or distant, you can then begin to firm up who you want to be and allow your roots to dig deep into that space.
There’s a quote that says, “A man who does not who he is can be tossed here and there, left and right, like a boat at sea in the middle of the storm.”
HBCUs/PBIs help black students identify their collective, traditional, historical and cultural heritage, while helping them discover who they want to become. Students can build on their rich history and overcome oppressive stigmas & perceptions.
