See It. Achieve It.
Representation has become one of the primary igniters of the young African American dream. Very few things light the flame of the heart like seeing someone who looks like you and possibly have the same life experience...do that which you have been dreaming. Not only does this let the dreamer know their dream is possible, but it also potentially provides a potential blue print for
success and allows them to expand their vision on how to arrive at their goal/dream/destination. This representation through achievement and/or blueprint is the backbone of inspiration and mentorship.
Inspiration is mentorship from a distance. Students may not have many opportunities to meet their industry examples in person, but that doesn’t mean they can’t observe, study, research and learn from a distance. This avenue of mentorship has become increasingly available with the expansion of social media. Social media has not increase the visibility of the once distant and popular personality, but also has increased the fan’s access to whatever that personality gives them.
Additionally, mentorship is inspiration up close. This approach allows the student direct and immediate access to the person/professional/personality they admire. Mentors consistently breathe inspiration into the mentee. This kind of inspiration tends to be much more sustainable and has a significantly more identifiable impact because of the multi-leveled relationship develop along the way. Mentors walk alongside and do life with the mentee. This way, they can more likely ensure the student sees it and achieves it. Mentorship is essentially representation in the flesh.
